Building backyard fishponds is not as easy as ABC. It requires careful planning, imagination and patience. Timiing is crucual so that the ground will not be frozen or overly wet. Summer is the best time to build your fishpond. But if you are planning to install a pre-fabricated liner, you can dig a hole on the ground to the correct depth, insert the liner, making sure it is level and sits securely on the ground.
These types of backyard fishponds require you to backfill around the sides before adding water, pumps, plants and fish. To make your pond more attractive, use your imagination and landscape around it.
Here are some ways to install a PVC liner in your backyard pond
Detemine a perfect spot. With the use of a rope, lay out the shape of your desired pond on the ground. Finish the design and dimension of your pond before digging. Don’t throw away the topsoil because you can still use it when you are landscaping the pond.
The usual size of a backyard fishpond is 18 to 24 inches deep, however, you can decide to have it as deep as 36 inches or three feet to allow greater diversity in your plants and fish population. Some add tiers around the side of the pond at various depths to place different aquatic plants
Check out for any rocks from the excavated area and remove them. Add a layer of damp sand at the bottom of the excavated area to keep the PVC from getting punctured.
Spread the PVC liner over the excavated area and let it sag. Rocks or bricks are very helpful in keeping the edge ofthe plastic in place. Start adding water onto the pond and allow the weight of the water to smooth out the liner. Carefully remove the rocks or bricks that are keeping the edges to allow the plastic to conform to the edges of the hole. Gently pull out the wrinkles.
To complete the installation of this kind of backyard fishponds, install pumps and filter to better maintain the pond. The pump and filter that you will install must be adequate to handle the volume of water in your pond. Don’t forget to put an air pump to allow oxygen circulation into the pond.
